The modern Zionist movement emerged in the second half of the nineteenth century as part of the resurgence of European nationalism. It had a strong moral and philosophical impetus from the start. While there was a desire to regain political sovereignty and solve the practical “Jewish problem”, and premonitions of the dangers facing Jewish existence in Europe, no less important was the quest for spiritual rebirth in the ancient homeland.
